Style: Celebrity hair

If you head to the bookstore and flip through some hairstyle magazines, you'll probably end up seeing a lot of familiar faces.More and more, hairstyle publications are using celebrities to highlight the latest trends - cutting away from the unknown hair models used in the past, said Katie Davis, a designer at Hair by Stewarts on Hamilton Boulevard."The celebrities are very big in the fashion-setting trends," Davis said. "They're out there. People see them more than they see everybody else."And there are Siouxlanders paying attention, according to local stylists. So while you probably won't bump into many Hollywood stars out and about in the tri-state area, you could see some of their hairdos.Allie Nylen, 21, gets her hair cut like Paris Hilton when she's back in Sioux City on breaks from Iowa State University in Ames. Her stylist here has been teen telling her ever since "The Simple Life" that she looks like the celebrity."She's kind of fun like Paris too," said Lisa Arens, designer/skin care specialist at Belle Touche Salon & Day Spa.

Tips On Caring For Your Hair During The Winter

(WCCO) Winter weather is harsh on hair. Cold, dry air creates static, breakage and the frizzies, not to mention "hat head." So what's a Minnesotan to do? The stylists at Jasmin Salon Spa on Grand Avenue in St. Paul said they get lots of questions about winter hair care from clients. In general, most stylists agree that no matter your hair type, it is a good idea to keep it covered as much as possible when you are outside in frigid weather. The cold air dries hair out, especially if your hair has been colored, permed or relaxed. You need extra moisture to combat the damaging effect of that dry air. Here's what you can do: Use weekly deep conditioners and put a humidifier in your bedroom to add moisture while you are sleeping. If you use a flat-iron, curling iron or blow dryer to style your hair, be sure you are using some type of hair lotion with it to lock in moisture with all that heat. Also be careful with hats and scarves that are made of wool or wool blends.

Uganda: Dark & Lovely Hair Stylists Graduate

150 graduands from Dark and Lovely Hair Dressing Academy were on Saturday awarded diplomas and certificates. Though it was not the ideal graduation from an Ivory tower, it spelled a revolution in the world of Uganda's salon business, which is flooded with talented workers most of whom have not attained professional training for their work.

They were mostly women who shone with their academic robes while their parents looked at them, chatted and obviously swelled with pride. Most of them either owned or worked in salons and had taken the course to improve on their work.
